The ingredients needed to make Basbousa(semolina cake):
  1. Prepare Syrup
  2. Take 2 1/4 cups sugar
  3. Make ready 1 1/2 cups water
  4. Get Juice from 1 lemon (or 2 tablespoon orange juice)
  5. Take 1 tablespoon honey
  6. Take Cake
  7. Prepare 2 cups semolina
  8. Make ready 1 cup sugar
  9. Get 1 stick butter, softened
  10. Get 1 cup whole milk
  11. Make ready 1 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
  12. Prepare 1 tablespoon baking powder
  13. Take 1 tablespoon baking soda
  14. Get 2 eggs
  15. Get Blanched split almonds

Instructions to make Basbousa(semolina cake):
  1. Prepare syrup first. Dissolve sugar in water in a medium saucepan. Add lemon juice and bring to boil. Once the syrup begins to boil, add in honey. Reduce heat and allow to slowly boil for about 8-10 min. Remove from heat and set aside.
  2. Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Lightly grease and flour a 9x12 baking dish.
  3. Cream together butter and sugar in a mixing bowl. Add eggs and vanilla.
  4. In separate bowl, combine semolina, baking powder and baking soda. Slowly add to butter and egg mixture. Stir in milk
  5. Pour mixture into baking dish and smooth with spoon. Take a butter knife and make diamond shapes. Place an almond in the center of each diamond.
  6. Bake for 25 min. Remove cake from oven and pour syrup over cake until no more can be absorbed. Allow to cool
